Donnici 99 In 1999 a 10 acre plot of land near Cosenza was developed into a vineyard with the intention of growing high quality grapes to make noteworthy Calabrese wines. Located in a beautiful area near the Sila National Park and minutes away from the Mediterranean, the focus of Donnici is to continually rediscover indigenous varietals yet experiment with some unique blends. The microclimate promotes an ideal setting to grow an outstanding crop year after year.
Calabria has always been one of the poorest regions of Italy as most people worked the land to live and eat. It doesn't help that the mafia ( called the ndrahgetta) still operates many of the profitable businesses in the region. However, a visit to Calabria reveals a beautiful land that is relatively undiscovered, Because of the lack of industrialization, beaches are pristine and pollution is not prevalent. The notable wines are red, and they are Ciro', Galioppo, and Magliocco. Most of the producers blend these varietals with other recognizable grapes to make truly outstanding wines.
